Dehydration: Prevalence, Dangers, and Effective Treatment

According to studies, Seventy-five percent of all Americans are dehydrated EVERY day. Although the study showed that most people had, in fact, drank 8 glasses of fluids per day, they still had net fluid loss, leading to chronic dehydration. This is due to the domination of caffeinated beverages (Too much Starbucks, Alcohol consumption (Too much wine), and diets high in sodium (Too many fries!!).

Dehydration causes fatigue. Recent studies showed that young people that were mildly dehydrated displayed symptoms of fatigue, both while exercising and sedentary. In fact, dehydration is the number one factor of mid-day fatigue. It is also a major factor in illnesses, such as having kidney stones. Remember our urine should be clear/straw-colored if it is more yellow or dark, that is an indicator of dehydration.

Do you feel thirsty??

That means that you are dehydrated. Even 1-2% dehydration levels can trigger the thirst response. Dehydration puts stress on our cognitive function, which has shown to lead to decreased concentration and short term memory with an increase in anxiety and irritability. Some studies actually showed an increase in metabolism (up to 30%!) with ingestion of cold water. The theory is that the body burns energy and increases metabolism when trying to warm up cold water that is ingested.

In fact, with viruses, excess travel or drinking and athletics, patients can suffer from severe dehydration. Some signs of severe dehydration include the inability to urinate (or very dark urine), dry skin that doesn’t ‘bounce’ back when pinched, rapid heartbeat and breathing, confusion/dizziness/lightheadedness, fever and chills. If these symptoms are occurring, it is very important to rehydrate early and in a safe manner

When a person is dehydrated, the natural flow of toxins being released and secreted from the body does not happen as efficiently or effectively. Dehydration can lead to constipation as well. There can be damage to the liver and kidneys. The most effective way to help alleviate all of this buildup is from hydration IV therapy. This type of therapy flushes the body with clean fluids and therefore optimizes the function of vital organs. Drinking fluids may not work as fast or efficient as flushing out toxins through intravenous methods.

What are the further benefits of receiving IV hydration with vitamins and minerals?

Well, first off, a person receives much-needed fluid directly into their vascular system (blood vessels) to help rehydrate. This works much more quickly and effectively in comparison to drinking fluids. Make no mistake, staying hydrated orally is very important, however, receiving fluids intravenously provides a more effective, rapid and safe response and helps fix dehydration.

Receiving vitamins and minerals through an IV bypasses the digestive system. Think about it, when you eat something, it goes from the mouth to the esophagus to the stomach. Then it goes into the gut and liver where it gets digested, metabolized and only partially absorbed. So, not much of the vitamins or minerals are actually seen in the bloodstream, and by the receptors throughout the body that are in need. However, when fluid, vitamins and minerals are given intravenously (IV), it goes directly into the bloodstream and provides immediate and profound effects all over the body.

Here are a few scenarios similar to patients we have treated (names, of course, have been altered)…

2. Mary is a 34-year-old who is 30 weeks pregnant, and she is really starting to feel more nauseated then during her first trimester. She also has a dry mouth all the time. She feels fatigued, and although her OB doctor has told her that these are all symptoms of pregnancy and dehydration she has been trying to increase her fluid intake. She has been drinking lots of water, and she really enjoys blue colored Gatorade- and drinks at least 1 bottle per day.

Solution: Mary is dehydrated. Most people at some point during their pregnancy have dehydration. And although many symptoms occur due to hormonal and physiologic changes that occur in the body, MANY symptoms can be relieved by hydration. It is difficult for someone (especially, who may be feeling nauseated) to be able to drink and absorb enough fluid to improve dehydration. IV fluid therapy can provide instant relief of many of the symptoms that occur during pregnancy- including nausea, vomiting, lethargy, dizziness and fatigue.

2. Todd is a 44 year old investment banker who is traveling constantly. He knows that the constant airflow while being on an airplane, plus being in and out of airports leads him to be dehydrated. He also enjoys good bottles of wine throughout the week. He is constantly and chronically fatigued, and he thinks it’s from his traveling and lack of sleep. He tries to drink as much juice, red bull and soda as he can to keep himself moving and hydrated.

Solution: Todd is chronically dehydrated from traveling, airplanes/airports, consuming alcohol, lack of sleep, and not drinking the right things orally. These are problems that many of us deal with. Intravenous hydration will help to restore the natural electrolytes, vitamins, minerals and fluid his body needs. This will help him to function at optimal levels and put some pep back in his step!

As stated above, 75% of people walk around dehydrated every single day!! The symptoms that many of us feel including lethargy, tiredness, weakness, fatigue, headaches, nausea, etc. can all be relieved by receiving IV hydration therapy.
